  • May has been an interesting month for us in Ventura, California. Instead of the usual sun and heat it has been pretty much cloudy and overcast and we are still getting rain! We hope that all the late rain we’ve had this year will greatly decrease the fire conditions that usually arrive in September and October. We are certainly surrounded by green hills at the moment!

Last month we began highlighting our C.A.R.E.S. and F.I.T.T.T. Principles as Attitudes of LearningSuccess. April’s attitude was Celebrate...

This month is A: Accept your role as a coach Be your child’s best success coach! (for parents) Be your own success coach! (for everyone - adults and kids)

    Here is your assignment:
    State these daily as Declarations:

Adults & Kids: Every morning and evening say 5 times: I coach myself for success.
In the morning think of at least one thing you will do that day to coach yourself for success (learn something new, make a schedule for a goal, exercise to keep fit, let go of one unhealthy food, etc.)

In the evening, list at least one thing you actually did to coach yourself for success.

Parents: Also say: I coach my child for success. Then think of at least two things you can do today to coach for success. In the evening, note the things you did.

Teachers: You can say: I coach my students for success. In the evening, note the things you did.

Do this every day for the next month and notice any changes. We’d love to hear about them!

    LearningSuccess Tips for All
    Kids

from Prevention Magazine, April 2006, Kids on the Run by Sari N. Harrar:
“Kids who sprint at rocket speed and then stop for horseplay aren’t being lazy—that’s how they’re wired to move. Let them run ahead and wait for you, or hit a trail with exercise stations where they can try a few chin-ups, stretch, or explore until you get there.”

from Parade Magazine, February 5, 2006, Lower the Volume! by Dr. Ranit Mishori:
“Hearing loss may be caused by a one-time exposure to an extremely loud sound (such as an explosion) or by exposure to loud sounds over months or years... Loudness, or sound intensity is measured in decibels (dB)...Experts believe that prolonged exposure to sounds above 85dB without any protection can damage your hearing.”

Some sounds below 85dB: rush-hour traffic, normal conversation, sound of heavy rainfall; some sounds above 85dB: subway train, lawn mower, power saw, drill, race-car noise, jet engine, loud music - concerts, headphones, iPods.

According to audiologist Dean Garstecki, Northwestern University, earphones have the potential of reaching 110dB. He says a simple rule of thumb is: “If you can’t hear the people around you, it’s too loud. And if other people are hearing what you’re hearing, it’s too loud.” He also recommends the 60/60 rule: Play the music at no more than 60% of the maximum volume - just over halfway between “off” and “max” for no more than 60 minutes.

from BBC News, January 11, 2006, Pupils must look away to think: “Far from daydreaming, children who avert their gaze when considering their response to a question are more likely to come up with the correct answer...The researchers believe teachers and parents often mistake ‘gaze aversion’ for children failing to understand a question and do not give them enough time to compose an answer. ‘The mistake adults make is to interject too quickly, they need to try and hold back,’ said Dr. Doherty-Sneddon. ‘If they avert their gaze it’s worth waiting because they are probably trying to come up with something. There is this idea of ‘look at me when I’m talking to you’, but it should be okay to look away at some point of the interaction.’ If a child looked blankly at an adult when asked a question it was a good indicator that the question had not been understood, she added.” (The research was published in the British Journal of Developmental Psychology.)

Our note for adults: We would like to point out here that many adults also need to look away in order to think and formulate responses. Studies have shown that the direction of their gaze - up, down, left, right - is influenced by their modality preferences, that is, whether they need to think in words, pictures, or in feelings!
